3M Food Safety has launched the 3M Molecular Detection System for detecting the pathogens present in food. The new detection system is simple to use and provides fast and accurate results. It is efficient in detecting pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli O157 etc.
The technology used for building the detection system is termed as isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence. The new system was designed as a solution to the customers need for a compact, easy-to-use robust pathogen detection system.
The Molecular Detection system provides highly sensitive results by amplifying the targeted nucleic acid present in the food samples. The evaluation of the systems performance has been done against a variety of food samples such as meat, pet food, environmental samples and processed foods. The detection unit is compact in size and occupies minimum counter space and is portable. Pathogen specific assays or procedural tests will be sold along with the detection system as test kits. Each of the assay test kits will consist of the same software interface and follow the same DNA extraction protocol for testing. Individual assays for Salmonella, E. coli O157 and Listeria are readily available. For Listeria monocytogenes, the test assay is expected to be ready by early 2012. The 3M Molecular Detection System is currently being tested at laboratories for global method recognitions.
