Protect your Digital Pyranometers with SPD01

SPD01 is a surge protection device for digital pyranometers. By acting as an extra line of defense against high-impulse currents and voltages, or surges, the SPD01 lowers the possibility of expensive instrument damage and data loss for linked devices. In PV power plants, for instance, surges are frequently caused by inductive switching and seasonal lightning.

Description

Immunity to High Voltages and Currents – Surges

Protect the Pyranometers with SPD01 - Surge Protector

The SPD01 device protects digital pyranometers against surges. It is intended for use with the "industrial pyranometer" series of instruments manufactured under the Hukseflux brand. The device also combines and coordinates the protection of the power supply and the RS-485 serial communication lines.

Protection against electrical surges is crucial for the pyranometer to function reliably in challenging "industry-grade" outdoor environments like solar (PV) power plants and meteorological stations. Hukseflux industrial pyranometers are tested and classified for industrial environments in accordance with IEC 61326-1 and IEC 61000-6-2 standards.

Why Add an SPD?

By creating a measurement system, pyranometer users can achieve multiple immunity levels. For instance, IEC 61000-4-5 states that the SR300-D1 industrial pyranometer has Level 2 surge immunity, meaning it can withstand surges of up to 1 kV. Including the Surge Protection Device SPD01 adds 4 kV of immunity.

Some general system components should be included to achieve the necessary level of immunity for a given installation, such as:

  • External surge protection, in addition to the built-in on-board sensor protection
  • Lightning protection system
  • Earthing and grounding network

SPD01 Properties

In the electrically harsh environment of PV power plants, SPD01 protects connected instruments from lightning strikes and power-switching-induced surge events. It also enables flexible system design. Proper installation of the SPD01 near a Hukseflux industrial pyranometer ensures that voltages and currents reaching the sensor are effectively suppressed.

System Design

A single SPD01 can protect up to three instruments as long as the instruments are close to the SPD.

  • Instruments are shielded from surges by the grounding system.
  • The distance between the instrument and the SCADA system can be significantly extended.

Multiple SPD01s may be used, depending on the instruments' layout and the system's design.

Sometimes, it helps separate the instruments from the mounting platform, as in the case of pyranometers installed on-array. The PID01 Pyranometer Isolation Disc is an optional accessory available from Hukseflux for this.

Optional SMF01

A useful metal bracket called SMF01 makes mounting a surge protection device on a vertical mast easier.
