This technology complements Omron’s flagship facial recognition technology. The two can be used in combination to facilitate gesture recognition by evaluating the position of the hand in relation to the face and hand shape. Such trigger-less recognition technique paves the way for natural manipulation or control of machines with hand gestures.

Omron’s facial recognition technology, “OKAO Vision” is capable of various functions such as face recognition, age and gender estimation, estimation of degree of smile and degree of eye opening which has led to the technology finding application in digital cameras for auto-focus function, in personal computers for image management and in other such similar devices. The company has made use of its acquired expertise to develop the hand gesture recognition technology that employs statistical classification and model-fitting methods.

Salient features of the new technology are elimination of trigger motion, simultaneous recognition of position, shape and movement of hand or finger, small memory requirement and hand gesture detection range from centimeters to several meters. The technology is compatible with Windows XP/7, iOS, Android OS and other operating systems. It has a recognition speed of 30 frames per second, employs a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and is capable of recognizing hand motion in all directions as well has hand or finger shapes such as a V-sign.

The company will be presenting the salient features of the hand recognition technology at the Symposium on Sensing via Image Information to be held from June 6 to 8 at Pacifico Yokohama.
