Avago Technologies Unveils New range of Optically-Isolated Voltage Sensors

Avago Technologies recently declared that a new family of optically-isolated voltage sensors is now available.

Being industry's first series of optical isolation amplifiers using sigma-delta modulation optimized for voltage sensing, these sensors serve varied applications. The ACPL-C87B, C87A, and C870 provide a 2-V input range and high 1 GOhm input impedance for designers and ideal for applications such as sensing voltages in electronic power conversion systems in motor drives, renewable energy systems and switching power supplies and sensor interfaces including NTC thermistor isolation in IGBT modules.

The ACPL-C87A having ±1% gain tolerance and the ACPL-C870 with ±3% gain tolerance serve general applications. The ACPL-C87B having ±0.5% gain tolerance is ideal for high-precision applications including renewable energy inverters that involve tracking the variable DC bus voltage and for servo and motor drives. The voltage sensors consist of a 1V/V unity gain with low gain drift of -35ppm/°C. Their non-linearity is maintained within 0.1% max. The voltage sensors feature an active-high shutdown pin for minimizing the IDD1 current to 15 µA while standby. These sensors are ideal for power-sensitive as well as for battery-powered applications.

Based on advanced Sigma-Delta modulation technology and using chopper-stabilized amplifiers, Avago Technologies' Optical Isolation Amplifiers ensure secure and precise current and voltage sensing in motor drives and power converters. The new devices include differential outputs that offer high gain accuracy and stability, superior isolation-mode noise rejection, a wide signal bandwidth of 100 kHz, and low offsets.

The integrated reinforced safety insulation and high CMR (common mode rejection) performance provide reliable operation in a noisy environment, thereby eliminating incorrect voltage measurements. The optically-isolated voltage sensors include 15 kV/ µs common-mode transient immunity. The CSA and IEC/EN/DIN EN60747-5-5 certification with a VIORM of 1230 Vpeak ensures safety. The sensors are also UL recognized with 5000 Vrms for 1 min/UL1577.

The ACPL-C87x voltage sensors are enclosed within stretched 8-lead SO-8 plastic packages with 8 mm creepage and clearance for compliance with global regulatory safety standards. The sensors include wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +105 °C.
