U.S. DOE Awards Grant for Dynasil for Developing Nuclear Sensors

Dynasil Corp has revealed that the U.S. DOE (Department of Energy) has granted funds to the tune of $6.2 million, for seven of the Phase-II SBIR projects, to be paid to its subsidiary company RMD (Radiation Monitoring Devices Inc), to be utilized for the design and development of nuclear instruments and sensors.

Office of the Biological and Environmental Research, a part of the DOE, is sponsoring three of the awards, for development of high resolution imaging detectors, to be used in future medical diagnostic apparatus, and in nuclear medicine research. These detectors could also be used for detecting nuclear weapons in homeland defense operations, and for industrial applications, oil explorations and scientific research.

The other four awards have been granted by the Office of the Basic Energy Sciences, another department in the DOE, to help in RMD’s investigation on sensor technologies, which in turn would prove to be useful for the researchers operating the DOE’s National Laboratories, in projects involving nuclear and high-energy physics, and material sciences. They cover projects such as development of novel detectors, which are founded on nano-particles for high-speed performance X-ray detection, and new sensors for nanoscale microscopy. These products can be used in fields, such as renewable energy, scientific research, environmental clean-up, cancer detection and baggage scanning.

Dynasil’s CEO, Craig T. Dunham said that the company was honored to accept these awards, and in achieving these high-tech sensor and detector devices. The company was also above all, supremely happy that their technological advancements would be used in commercially viable products, for x-ray and nuclear detection, to be used in applications for medical imaging and homeland security operations.

According to Michael Squillante, Vice President of Research RMD, each one of these projects, was being carried on with the help of the best researchers at universities and national laboratories. Both Dynasil and the DOE are collaborating to achieve the technological advancements, and provide robust and innovative products for Dynasil to commercialize and distribute.
