In order to detect the motorists who overstayed in the parking lots and tracing the lawbreakers in the parking area, the council of the city contracted with Frogparking company in Palmerston- North for installation of 4000 sensors which operate using solar energy.
Frogparking decided to initiate trials in the city as a part of a five-year plan scheme. The project is likely to create regulation awareness amongst the motorists and the company has allocated an enhanced 50:50 meter income to the city council.
The company will be providing free parking facility in the city for the older people who fall in the age group of 65 and above during weekdays from 9 AM to 11 AM apart from the moderate time constraints and lower rates are likely to be imposed in Broadway Ave.
Jono Naylor, Mayo stated that Frogparking proposed the project to the city council so as to exhibit their novel technology to the entire world. He also added that the technology will also enhance their capability to gather information and facilitate the infrastructure planning by monitoring the space.
Frogparking firm is managed by Don Sandbrook, who fabricated the solar powered sensor featuring non-replacement batteries. The parking bays will be embedded with discs and the sensors will monitor the space occupancy and the data thus obtained will be transmitted to a website and to the wardens.
Naylor added that the native technology will enhance the parking facility technology that would make parking administration easier avoiding violence of the regulations.
Wendy Gadd, president, Grey Power Manawatu commented that this parking technology is highly advanced and will help the senior citizens.
If the committee of the city council proposal is not remodeled by next month, people need to request to be a part of the project and a management fee will be imposed which is yet to be finalized.
Mrs Gadd recommended that there should be discussion with Age Concern and Grey Power regarding the parking scheme before it is implemented.
