Microsemi and D-Link to Develop Internet of Things-Enabled Smart Alarm Detector

Microsemi Corporation, a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance; and D-Link, which specializes in the design, development and manufacture of networking and connectivity products for mass consumers, small to medium business and enterprise market segments worldwide; today announced their collaboration to develop D-Link's mydlink® Smart Alarm Detector (DCH-S165).

The Wi-Fi based detector monitors and identifies the sounds of standard UL-certified smoke or carbon monoxide alarms using Microsemi's ZL38062 sound classifier audio processor as the primary integrated circuit of the device.

Leveraging the latest Internet of Things (IoT) technology, mydlink Smart Alarm Detector plugs into an electrical outlet to create an integrated home safety solution, without the cost and inconvenience of installing new smoke or carbon monoxide detectors. Utilizing Microsemi's system-on-chip (SoC) audio processor inside the Smart Alarm Detector's wall plug, the device detects the sound of an industry standard T3 smoke alarm or T4 carbon monoxide alarm and passes that detection flag to an app notifying the homeowner or alarm monitoring company. This enables homes without Wi-Fi enabled alarms to avoid undergoing expensive home rewiring and/or alarm replacement (of approximately $100 each) by simply plugging this module into the wall as a simple addition to the existing detector network.

"Microsemi is thrilled to team up with a leading customer like D-Link to provide an industry-leading solution for the home automation market that provides the end user substantial savings and quick time to market," said Roger Holliday, senior vice president and general manager at Microsemi. "Microsemi's AcuEdge™ technology in our ZL38062 hardware platform designed to provide alert notification for various security alarms, and incorporating this into D-Link's mydlink Smart Alarm Detector enables the transformation of any home into a connected home, with monitored T3 and T4 alarms to deliver safety and peace of mind."

According to market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), IoT technology and services spending will generate global revenues of $8.9 trillion by 2020, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 8 percent. Using today's IoT technology, the Smart Alarm Detector easily connects to an existing Wi-Fi network and works with any UL-certified smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. By placing the detector within 50 feet of these alarms, it accurately detects the temporal sounds from the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms via Microsemi's audio processor and sends a mobile push notification if either of the alarms sound.

"Our mydlink Smart Alarm Detector offers a state-of-the-art solution for the home automation market ideally suited to Microsemi's AcuEdge technology, which when combined allows monitoring companies to create a smart home without the need for every alarm in the home to be smart," said A.J. Wang, chief technology officer at D-Link. "The company's ZL38062 solution has proven reliable and cost-effective for today's connected home market opportunities."

Designed for world-class high definition voice applications, Microsemi's ZL380 series of audio processors features the company's Microsemi AcuEdge technology. This innovative technology includes a set of highly complex and integrated algorithms that allows the user to extract more information from the audio environment. It consists of license-free, royalty-free intelligent audio intellectual property (IP) algorithms. When combined with Microsemi's highly integrated ZL380 series of audio processors, the solution accelerates customers' time-to-market via validated reference design and MiTuner™ graphical user interface (GUI) software.
