Powell Employs Thermal Sensors in Electrical Equipments

Powell Industries, a global designer of devices and systems for the control and management of electrical energy and for other major processes, declared the accomplishment of an Asset Purchase Agreement with the Vancouver-based ThermaBrite Technologies in British Columbia.

Powell has gained the live, fiber-optics oriented thermal sensing patent-pending technology by this contract, which inspects thermal spots in the electrical power systems. These thermal spots are generated mainly at the bus connections resulting in arc-flash and insulation failures.

The sensing units that have been integrated at crucial areas in the devices transmit the information by means of fiber-optic wires to furnish enhanced reliability and safe signals.  The sensor data is processed using a high-quality controller of the company and is then presented to the user for observation and evaluation by transmission systems, consisting of the company’s PowlSmart system.

This unique technology can be widely deployed in novel devices or as an addition to the prevailing devices that have already been utilized in the filed. This specific system provides constant inspection of power equipments in comparison with the periodic monitoring by electrical device operators. This feature in turn supplies the potentiality to check and perform the operations with respect to the thermal-based system’s actions. Thus by deploying this technology, high-performance and less maintenance can be attained. Powell will be incorporating this system into a wide range of devices of the company apart from its advancements for improved solutions.

Powell’ systems serve numerous refineries, petrochemical plants, pulp and paper manufacturers, oil and gas producers, commuter railways, mining operations, and other transportation systems.
