Traffic Surveillance Cameras to Replace Sensors

Camp Hill-based Atlantic Transportations Systems was offered a contract by Hampden Township for providing video surveillance system at Carlisle Pike and Orrs Bridge Road. This novel surveillance system will be configured to measure speed, occupancy and volume.

The main aim of installing such imagers is to substitute the sensing devices that are embedded in the pavement to monitor automobile traffic and to alter the color of the light in the traffic signals.

According to Mike Gossert, Township Manager, if the camera identifies a vehicle in the crossroads, it relays the information to the traffic signal controller to alter the light for easy movement of vehicles.

He added that this new methodology will provide smooth traffic flow and is highly economical by avoiding the replacement of sensing units during road construction.

Gossert explained that the major functionality of the camera is to observe and regulate the traffic in the crossroads like the currently installed sensors. The township will not be checking the recorded data regularly and penalty will not be imposed on traffic violations in this case. The Township staff has to download the images by going to the place where the camera is installed.

Nate Silcox, township commissioner stated that the Orrs Bridge road construction will start immediately and the surveillance cameras will be integrated along with the process.
