The company – which has grown to a team of 15 since it was founded in 2016 – has secured £400,000 from a private investor to finalise the development and commercial launch of the product through a new spin-out company, Secure Illumination.

In collaboration with CENSIS, the centre for innovation in digitalisation and enabling technologies, JCESS is developing a discreet and unobtrusive security device that integrates into everyday environments. It is designed to detect potential threats and irregularities in real-time, providing users with advanced warning and monitoring capabilities.

The product’s versatility also makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from residential security to supporting the independence of older or vulnerable individuals in their homes. Initial testing will begin in the coming weeks, with deployments planned at locations including Ibrox Training Centre and a new housing development in Glasgow.

John Cooper, Director at JCESS, said: “This idea came to me in a moment of inspiration, and it has been incredible to see it evolve into a truly groundbreaking product. While we initially received support from universities to refine our concept, it was our partnership with CENSIS that really propelled our development forward.

“Our technology addresses long-standing challenges in the safety and security industry, offering a solution that is not only effective but also blends seamlessly into its environment – making it much more difficult to detect by possible intruders. We believe this is just the start of something much bigger, with potential applications across a variety of sectors.”

CENSIS is playing a crucial role in designing and building the product, ensuring it meets the demands of its intended applications. The centre also developed the device’s software, allowing users to interact with the system.

Cade Wells, Business Development Director at CENSIS, said: “JCESS demonstrates what innovation can bring to businesses and organisations of all sizes. Its new product could make a significant difference to a number of sectors and has helped the company to secure new investment. We’ve been proud to help JCESS on that journey with engineering and technical support, enabling it to diversify its product offering and enter new markets.”
