Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS) announced that it has won the 2010 TV Innovation award under the Green Technology category for its digital ambient light sensors. The award was presented at the 2nd Annual TV Innovation Awards, which honors the companies in the television space.
The TAOS digital ambient light sensors adjust the brightness of the display picture automatically, hence reduce the overall power consumption of the system. The sensors are suitable to adjust the brightness of OLED, plasma, and LED displays, based on the ambient light conditions. This improves the quality of the display picture, while decreasing the power consumption by 30%. In addition, the light sensors provide enhanced contrast ratio, in combination with the system SoC.
The light sensors utilize a dual photodiode architecture, which enables a more aesthetic and flexible industrial design, as it allows the HDTV makers to hide the sensor behind dark glass or plastic that is spectrally distorting.
The President of IMS Research, Ian Weightman, stated that the judges were impressed with the distinct capabilities of the digital ambient light sensing solution of TAOS. IMS Research administers the TV Innovation Awards.
