Army Corps Installs New Sensing Equipment at Canaveral Lock

The Canaveral Lock is a man-made passage that links the Atlantic Ocean and the Banana River. Many commercial fishing vessels, Oil barges, and NASA rockets, as well as manatees have been passing through it.

The faulty equipment at the Canaveral Lock is not identifying the sea mammals before the gates closes, leading to the death of three manatees in the past two years, with the most recent killing in November.

According to Aaron Kelly, corps project manager and contracting officers representative, the Army Corps of Engineers is trying to resolve this issue with installation of new sensing devices at the gates for nearly $1.2 million. He added that the previous system has been faulty, and the new system features improved software potentialities for a refined alarm system.
