PrimeSense, which manufactures the hardware powering Kinnect, announced that its Immersive Natural Interaction solutions will be integrated in a user interface, developed by ASUS, called the WAVI Xtion. The user interface is a media center software to be used in PC.
It allows the users to communicate with the media content within the room itself, eliminating the use of any controllers. By using this gesture-controlled user interface, the users can access media content, browse internet, and play games, when the first ever PC-exclusive 3D-sensing professional development system, the Xtion PRO is developed.
Xtion PRO is likely to be available in market from February 2011. Developers can market their applications in the impending Xtion online Store.
The WAVI Xtion will be available commercially in the second quarter of 2011, and will be launched globally in different phases.
PrimeSense has recently started the OpenNI (Open Natural Interaction) consortium, which is a non-profit group, focussing on boosting the development of Natural Interaction applications. OpenNI has developed the OpenNI framework that offers an API for coding utilizing Natural Interaction. This API allows communication with low level devices, such as vision and audio sensors, as well as high-level middleware systems such as for visual tracking, and employing computer vision.
