DRS to Deliver Multi-Spectral Surveillance Suite for Australian Department of Defense

The Australian Department of Defense has offered a $30 million contract to DRS Technologies for the integration of its Multi-Spectral Surveillance Suite to the surveillance variant of the light armored vehicles of the Australian military.

Based on the contact, the company will be manufacturing systems, a systems installation laboratory, spares and its related logistics support.

According to the company, they have already acquired various contracts for the MSSS system development and anticipate that the current contract will be accomplished by March 2013. Melbourne-based Armored Fighting Vehicle Systems Program Office is the contracting authority within the Australian Defense Materiel Organization.

The MSSS features a collection of electro-optical sensing devices embedded within the terrain surveillance radar and can be utilized for fixed and dismounted reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition missions. The ASLAV-S MSSS is capable of performing constant surveillance and targeting operation by means of a tight in-built combination of stabilized infrared and color day imagers and a laser rangefinder suite.

The system is associated with the Australian version of DRS Technologies Manportable Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar with a 29.5-foot telescoping mast.
