FGII Launches Mobile Survey System with Advanced Sensors

Topcon IP-S2 Mobile Survey System, a new technology, has been introduced in the Chinese Shanxi Province by the Shanxi Foundation Geographical Information Institute (FGII).

The system was delivered during January 2010 to Shanxi FGII. The related ceremony was attended by many government officers. Osamu Hoshida, special adviser for the mobile surveying and mapping technologies of  Topcon Corporation, informed that this system incorporates the state-of-the-art sensing technologies like laser scanners, high-precision GNSS receivers, 360° digital video camera, vehicle wheel encoders, and the inertial measurement unit (IMU). Hoshida added that the IP-S2 provides cost-effective, high-speed 3D spatial data gathering solutions.

Shanxi FGII’s Deputy Director, Wu Boyi, said that FGII is the first entity to launch a vehicle-based mobile survey system in China. He explained that as the only publisher of cityscape models, maps, and geographical content related to the Shanxi province, FGII had to use this novel technology for revolutionizing its workflow order for meeting the increasing demand for its products.

The Shanxi Bureau of Surveying and Mapping has recently set up the first as well as the only training center in Asia that focuses on the 3D mobile mapping and surveying technologies. This bureau collaborates with a Topcon distributor, Beijing Topcon Business & Trading Limited (BTBT).

Boy Wu informed that most of the exhaustive maps in his region, which includes specified maps and analyzers, can be used by licensed surveyors only, while the general public receives incomplete information. He revealed that his organization plans to develop novel web-enabled maps that offer additional values to the common citizen.
