Parking Problems to be Solved with New Sensors

Metro will begin testing a new program in early February at its car parks in Fort Totten Kiss and Ride lot to enable drivers to locate not only available parking space but also the time it will be available for.

Sensors will transmit data to the company’s website and parker application. If the test program proves to be a success, the sensing network will be used in other car parks run by the company. Users will be able to log on to www.wmata.com, the company’s official website or download the parker application software on an iPhone or iPad to check for available parking space in the 51 car parks fitted with the sensors. Once the sensors are placed in position, they will be incorporated into the iPhone application.

Besides giving information on available space and time, the software will also inform drivers on how much it will cost them and the mode of payment. According to Frank DeBernardo, chairman of Metro Riders' advisory council, the system will help drivers park their vehicles especially at peak hours.
