Imec designs next-generation, low-cost imaging systems such as smart zone lenses and hyperspectral cameras. These imaging systems are based on micromirror technologies. New features, which are available in current technologies, can be added using CMOS technology.
Unlike conventional camera systems, hyperspectral cameras divide the light spectrum in various wavelength bands. It can capture both spectral curves and fingerprints to provide a detailed data about the object. Current hyperspectral cameras are costly, slow and large, making them useful only for research applications.
Imec is exploring hyperspectral imaging technologies to design small, inexpensive and high-speed MEMS-based system for medical, commercial and agricultural applications.
The company also provides a silicon photonics platform, which enables a combination of electronics and photonics as well as miniaturization of intricate photonic features on a chip. The platform helps in designing photonic parts with high-precision, thus resulting in integrated photonic circuits. Utilizing conventional microelectronic CMOS production procedures and facilities to obtain optical functions makes silicon photonics a viable alternative solution.
Imec offers yet another solution called CMOS image sensor platform to design imagers for hyperspectral imaging, scientific imaging, industrial monitoring, medical imaging and space imaging applications.
