Ophir Photonics, a supplier of accurate laser measurement tools, has unveiled a Shock Absorber at Photonics West 2011. The device is a mounting post that allows operation of sensitive pyroelectric laser powered-sensors in a surrounding that vibrates.
The mount removes the vibration and false triggering, making it 2 to 10 times more resistant to vibration.
According to Ephraim Greenfield, CTO, Photonics Group at Ophir-Spiricon, the device measures the heat generated from repeated vibrations, but it is sensitive to audio and heat signals. Thus it can emit false readings when it is confronted with vibration or shock. Some such devices have a minimum energy level that can be pre set by the user that will remove false readings caused by noise. But this makes the device less sensitive to good signals. The new device removes false signals while retaining its sensitivity to good signals, providing precise measurement of low energy vibrated lasers in noisy conditions.
Laser sensor heads are mostly fitted on to vibrating tables, particularly in systems made up of vibrating components. The pulsing can trigger false reactions in the sensor. The new device has a rubber-embedded screw flexibly shielding the post from the sensor head, lowering the possibility of false alarms being triggered.
The device is compatible with all energy sensors developed by the company, such as the PE Series of pyroelectric detectors that offer high damage limit, high vibration power, and a wide spectral range.
