Rain and Freezing Sensors to Avoid Road Accidents

The sprinkler systems and the freezing environment in some North Texas regions have created icy and adverse driving conditions.

However, these issues can be eliminated by deploying freeze and rain sensors on irrigation systems, according to AgriLife Extension program specialist for water resources, Dotty Woodson.

Woodson continued that the sensors are developed to stop automatic sprinkler systems during rainy conditions or when temperatures go down below freezing point. It can be bought at locations where irrigation equipment is being marketed, she added.

Woodson said that the irrigation systems can be stopped easily by turning off the dial. However, issues would occur in commercial properties during the absence of persons on overnight or in weekends. Latest irrigation regulations in most of the communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region demand all new systems should be deployed with sensors. In certain cities, the older systems should also have been deployed with sensors, she added.
