University Receives Jet Engine Turbine for Further Research

A jet engine loaned by the Maine Air National Guard will enhance the decade old on-going research on wireless sensors at the University of Maine.

Although, everyone at the university including faculty members and students alike have been researching wireless sensors on miniature models of jet engine, this development will help them work with a turbine engine in its own environ. Researchers fix the sensors to the engine rotors and other mobile components to study strain, temperature and deterioration in an endeavor to find ways to keep the engine in good condition in an effort to minimize maintenance expenses.

The university has already obtained funds amounting to $3.6 million to help make these sensors available in the commercial sector for military applications.
