Maxim Integrated Products has unveiled the MAX44007 and MAX44009, digital ambient-light sensor ICs. The devices have a gain block and incorporate two optical sensors, an ADC, and digital functionality with in a 2x2x0.6mm compact footprint.
The devices are power efficient and transmit data to a central microcontroller. They minimize the frequency of I²C communications. They are suitable for tablet and notebook PCs, smart phones, TVs, digital lighting-control systems, and applications that control light. They feature an optimum total gain fault of 15%, while the digital interface is resistant to electrical disturbance.
They have two photodiodes with optical filters that repel ultraviolet and infrared light. Spectra variations between light sources are rectified with algorithms. The MAX44009 can measure light from 0.045 to 188,000lux, with more than 4,000,000 to 1. They use a current of 0.65µA and operate from 1.7V to 3.6V supply voltage. The low supply voltage ensures the same 1.8V to be used for both the supply voltage and the I²C interface.
