Biosensors for Health Monitoring Within Homes

Nitto Denko Asia Technical Centre (NAT) will broaden its holdings in Singapore with a prototyping centre.

The centre will be situated at STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) under a Lab-in-RI programme. Nitto Denko is a producer of diversified materials and optical films for LCD TVs.

The centre has been opened as an offshoot of IMRE's earlier research and development work collaborating with NAT on developing optical waveguide sensors that are both sensitive and cost-effective. NAT will develop the devices’ properties into cost- effective and user friendly biosensors suitable for residential applications.

According to Dr Su Xiaodi, who is leading the IMRE research team, this collaboration will help them to develop the second edition of the biosensor to be used extensively in residential applications. The devices will help users monitor their health efficiently and cost- effectively in the privacy of their homes.

The IMRE-Nitto Denko joint venture will start its research and development work at the prototyping centre in February 2011 with the first module to be made available in the first quarter of 2012.
