New Film Sensor for Measuring Freshness of Meat

Fraunhofer has come up with a new detector that is in the form of a film, to give the consumer the right indication of whether the meat is fresh or not.

The expiry dates do not give the right indication of the freshness of meat products especially, and hence this new detector comes handy in gauging the freshness.

Film Detector for meat

Rotten meat gives out a distinct smell when the packet is opened. Researchers at Fraunhofer have therefore designed the detector to sense this odour and indicate the freshness. The sensor can be incorporated into the package that is used to wrap meat and is sensitive to the amines molecules that are released by meat in the process of decaying. A yellow colour on the film indicates that the meat is good and a shift of colour from green to blue indicates that the meat has decayed. Further research is going on at Fraunhofer in designing a module that would be used to seize rotten meat before shipping itself.

This new technology is very useful as it is simple and easily readable. It can be applied in many places. The freshness indication by way of colour change is appealing to the customer and also saves him the trouble of being poisoned by rotten meat.
