TowerJazz and Medigus have teamed up to create the world’s smallest disposable camera that would be useful in medical applications such as endoscopy, bronchoscopy, gynecology, cardiology, orthopedic and robotic surgical procedures.
The camera delivers high performance at low cost; it is extremely sensitive and provides high resolution images. The disposable camera saves time spent on laborious sterilization process that is common in endoscopic procedures.
The imaging system is a culmination of Towerjazz’s advanced sensor design and production technologies and Medigus’s electronic and optic technologies. TowerJazz would be manufacturing the camera in its Fab2 by implementing the 0.18 µ CMOS image sensor technology and will be combined into the camera developed at Medigus’s facilities.
Sophisticated technology such as TSV (through silicon via) for packaging reduces the camera size greatly and hence cost of high-volume production is minimized. The image sensor within the camera measures 0.66x0.66 mm, yet the image resolution is 45K pixels. Bio-compatible components are used in the camera; hence it is suitable for medical applications such as diagnostics and therapy.
Medigus’s introductory sales plan would target Japanese and American customers. Dr. Elazar Sonnenschein, CEO at Medigus, attributed the successful creation of the advanced imager to the collaboration with TowerJazz. He was positive of the benefits that this camera would provide to the field of medicine and diagnostics.
Dr. Avi Strum, Vice President and General Manager, Specialty Business Unit at TowerJazz, stressed that the quality and performance of the camera is a result of TowerJazz’s sophisticated technology and Medigus’ expertise.
