Luna Innovations has declared that it will endeavor to increase its product development based on the terms of its supply and development agreement with Hansen Medical, by continuing to incorporate its shape sensing technology in the medical robotic solutions developed by Hansen.
The multi year agreement between the two companies signed in December 2009 stipulated that Luna’s fiber optic shape sensors would be incorporated into Hansen’s medical products. Hansen develops robotic solutions for precise placement, monitoring and manipulation of catheter-based technologies and catheters.
The agreement signed in 2009 is being amended to allow for budget enhancement and increasing the scope of the development work undertaken by the two companies.
Luna’s localization and shape detection technology can offer real time position computing to enable surgeons to examine the human body. The system comprises instrumentation, disposable optic sensing fiber and software. Luna’s technology offers precise, continuous and direct measurement of the device position without any unfavorable effect from line of sight restrictions and does not require radiation or electrical signals to be induced into the body.
