OmniVision Technologies Releases 5 MP CMOS Image Sensors

OmniVision Technologies, a company that offers advanced digital imaging solutions, released an image sensor, OV5690, which utilizes the company’s OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture.

OV5690 Sensor

The OV5690 offers a resolution of 5 MP and is an ideal solution for thin mobile handsets, tablet computers, and smart phones. The sensor delivers superior image quality and a 20% decrease in camera module height.

OmniVision’s product marketing manager, Per Rosdahl, stated that as per industry sources 5 MP CMOS image sensors will occupy more than 15% of the total sensor market. She added that with the introduction of the OV5690 CameraChip, the company offers a highly aggressive solution with improved performance and thin module height.

The sensor incorporates a 2-lane MIPI/LVDS interface. It can be easily integrated into the standard module size of 8.5 x 8.5 mm and a z-height less than 5 mm. The OV5690 is now being used by key clients. Mass production of the sensor is anticipated to start in the second half of 2011.
