u-blox will demonstrate its improved LEA-6H GPS module, which also assists GLONASS navigation, at the Telematics Detroit 2011 conference at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan.
The Russian GLONASS satellite system is a complementary and substitute solution to the Global Positioning System (GPS) based in the US. This system currently comprises 22 stationed satellites along with the entire group of 24 satellites required for complete worldwide coverage programmed for the end of 2011.
The Russian Ministry of Transport said that in due time the GLONASS-based navigation systems will be utilized by all vehicles that transport passengers or dangerous materials in Russia. Moreover, advanced navigation systems that use both GLONASS and GPS receivers may provide more advanced level of performance for global positioning systems.
The President of u-blox America, Nikolaos Papadopoulos said that the combination of GLONASS and GPS functionality shows the versatility of the company’s hardware and firmware receiver technology. First samples of GPS/GLONASS receivers are planned for Q2 of 2011.
