Kyocera has announced the production of the first crystal unit called CT2520DB’, The product, which is equipped with a thermistor, is an AT cut type crystal unit with dimensions of 2.5 x 2.0 mm. Sampling of the product has commenced in the month of March.
Nowadays, mobile handsets need crystal devices for producing the reference signal for stable communication. In these devices, temperature compensation of the crystal product is critical to reduce frequency variation under a broad operating temperature range. The crystal units are being utilized in several designs in smartphones, CDMA and 3G handsets. They are replacing TCXO device in handsets utilizing Qualcomm chipsets, which were very popular in the past. In handsets, temperature sensors are needed to be positioned very close to the crystal unit for achieving high precision temperature compensation.
The product’s frequency is 19.2 MHz and its operating temperature range is minus 30°C to +105°C, which is ideal for wireless communication. The thermistor is kept as close as possible to the crystal unit to compensate for the frequency variation caused by the thermal transients. In addition, the delay of temperature change between the thermistor and the crystal unit is kept low by keeping these parts on either side of a ceramic package.
The product’s main advantages are its utilization of temperature data right next to the crystal unit, exceptional temperature tracking, high reliability, reduced assembly space, environmental compliance and shield structure.
