Dexter Industries, a leading manufacturer of sensors for LEGO MINDSTORM, has announced that it would be inaugurating a novel Thermal Infrared Sensor for the LEGO MINDSTORM.
The company would offer complete software and hardware information on the sensor for encouraging and motivating young engineers to learn and understand the LEGO MINDSTORM sensors.
The company has designed the sensor to address the requirements of the RoboCup Jr. Rescue Community. Initially, the sensor was created for helping students to develop and build robots to locate warm objects in a maze. The sensor’s thermal infrared technology helps in determining the object’s temperature and could be utilized in engineering, chemistry, K-12 physics and STEM projects and programs.
Dexter Industries expects that the rising national interest in STEM education would be helpful in selling the sensor globally to educational groups and schools. The company anticipates that if the sensor’s source code and design is opened up, it would promote interest in STEM education and also motivate students to gain skills in chemistry, physics, engineering and programming.
Dexter is the first company to provide a thermal infrared sensor for the LEGO MINDSTORM and this sensor’s specialty is that it could both measure and detect the objects’ surface and ambient temperatures. The company also produces a number of sensors for hobbyists and the education field such as a GPS guidance System, solar power systems, and pressure temperature sensor devices for the Mindstorms NXT system.
