Apple has applied for yet more patents. This time it is for the technology that can help a mobile’s orientation sensors correct common photographic problems. The patent has been called “Image Capture Device Having Tilt and/or Perspective Correction”
As per one of the patent claims, the technology involves the use of gyroscopes, compasses, or accelerometers to determine a device's orientation. It then uses that data to fix problems such as a tilt that would keep a horizontal line from being level.
Another claim related to this one involves making a correction to distortion that is caused due to the camera not being held vertical. A distance measurement to the subject would be factored in and a photo could be corrected after it was taken or during the time it was being clicked.
This would a new way to handle camera shaking while taking a snap. Most digital cameras have movable sensors and lens elements to counter the problem. Unfortunately, the iPhone currently lacks ultrasonic and infrared sensors that capture the orientation and distance data but the iPhone 4 has a backside illumination sensor that is more sensitive than conventional models and Apple seems set to make it even better.
