OmniVision Technologies has signed a $45 million agreement with VisEra Technologies to purchase its wafer-level lens production operations.
Currently, OmniVision outsources the production and assembly processes of wafer level lens with respect to its CameraCube Technology. The company expects that by the Q2 of 2012, the transaction would be finalized.
According to Shaw Hong, who serves as CEO at OmniVision, the company’s market leadership could be extended by using the CameraCube technology, while increasing the content that is being sold into each and every consumer device. Traditionally, lens and sensor production have always been separate endeavors, wherein the components are combined at the modular assembly stage.
He further stated that the CameraCube technology would help them to design sensors and also the related lens elements into an integrated unit, which would create a monolithic, re-flowable image sensor device. The production process would be streamlined in view of this transaction and would also allow the company to consolidate its supply chain and decrease the expenses for meeting customers’ rising demands for the CameraCube products.
