Samsung Electronics, a global advanced semiconductor solutions company, has added a new HD CMOS imager for ultra-slim tablet devices and smartphones to its portfolio of products for HD video and video telephony. The S5K8AA is a 1.2 Mp high resolution, system-on-chip (SoC) 1/8.2" CMOS image sensor (CIS).
The S5K8AA can be used in camera modules that are shorter than 3 mm. It improves the ability of the user facing cameras, providing vivid, high-quality images for making video calls on tablet devices and smartphones. The imager has a superior 1.4 um backside illumination pixel technology that enables good low-light sensitivity during the capture of video in real-time. It supports 60 fps at VGA resolution and 30 fps at HD (720p) video resolution. The S5K8AA imager can be fit on to a 2.8 mm low profile camera module of size 5.5 x 5.5 mm. It has a SoC design that has a image signal processor integrated for providing compact, high-density measurements.
The increase in demand in front facing cameras on mobile consumer devices for migration to HD video telephony supporting CMOS imagers has been influenced by the need for higher resolution cameras on larger displays but with slimmer profiles, HD quality video conferencing, and 4G network commercialization.
Samsung displayed the S5K8AA HD CMOS Imager at the 8th Annual Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum in Westin Taipei.
