The Wireless Pneumatic Thermostat (WPT) manufactured by Cypress Semiconductors’ subsidiary, Cypress Envirosystems, has been chosen by Building Green to feature in its list of Top-10 products for the year 2012.
The selection was made by the Environmental Building News and GreenSpec magazine editors. The WPT, for which a patent application has been filed can be retrospectively fitted to pneumatic thermostats that are currently being used in order to provide direct digital control (DDC) within a short period. The cost of retrofitting a WPT is 80% lesser than retrofitting a DDC in the conventional method. The time taken to install a WPT is also less than 20 min without the need to disturb occupants of the building.
Other features of the WPT are the ability to self-calibrate automatically, sense temperature remotely, integrate BACnet with building automation systems that are already present, program zone control, set night setback and the ability to communicate with Auto-Demand Response programs. The data that is received from the sensors in the thermostat is used for the reduction of maintenance costs and to save energy. Users of WPT from Cypress Envirosystems include hospitals, K-12 schools, office building, government buildings and universities. More than 70% buildings in North America still use conventional pneumatic thermostats. Over the past year, GreenSpec, which is a national directory of green products, has added more than 170 products to its list. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council has been the driving force behind the invention of many green products.
