Atmel, a provider of microcontroller and touch solutions, has declared that the company’s QTouch AT42QT2120, a capacitive touch controller is capable of the industry’s longest proximity sensing range of more than 10 in. With this achievement in the sensing range, the system can alert itself as a finger or an object nears the system.
The system will switch on the backlight or boot up when the system is touched by an approaching object or finger. The Atmel QT2120 can be suitably used in computing, consumer, industrial, automotive, medical applications.
A QTouchADC sensing algorithm is deployed in the Atmel QT2120 capacitive touch controller in order to eliminate external component requirement and to increase the scan time. The use of QTouchADC sensing algorithm in the controller reduces the power consumption, while proximity scanning is performed by the controller in the standby mode. An advanced touch interface and greater proximity scanning performance is achieved in various applications by the use of Atmel’s QT2120 controller.
Randy Lawson, Consumer Electronics and Display Electronics research’s principal analyst and manager, stated that the industrial, consumer and automotive business had grown at a 5-year CAGR of 5% from 2010 and the manufacturers are expecting to differentiate their products to compete with other products. Lawson added that by releasing the Atmel’s QT2120, the position of the company is improved in the controller market for sliders, wheels, and also in the proximity sensing market.
