Analog and mixed signal semiconductors provider, Skyworks Solutions has announced that it is bolstering the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and global positioning system (GPS) solutions for Samsung Electronics, a provider of smart phones.
Skyworks’ latest GPS/GNSS solutions feature a specially designed filter and an integrated low-noise amplifier. They are “plug and play” devices that do not require any external components. The company’s SKY65702-11 device provides a better noise figure, gain, linearity and an input compression point of one dB. The integrated filter provides good out-of-band rejection performance and low in-band insertion loss for personal communication service, LTE/cellular and wireless local area network frequency bands.
The executive VP and General Manager of high performance analog at Skyworks, Liam K. Griffin stated that navigation is becoming a prominent feature in smart tablets and phones. By utilizing its capabilities, the company is providing innovative solutions for improving the performance and reducing the intricacy of solutions for users. The new solutions allowed Skyworks to expand its share for RF content in mobile platforms, he concluded.
Embedded GPS/GNSS solutions are predicted to become a core part of smart phones and tablets. Oppenheimer & Co. has reported that the global market for smart phones is expected to grow from around 400 million units in 2011 to one billion by 2015. Adoption of tablets is expected to follow suit and is expected to grow from approximately 50 million in 2011 to more than 125 million units by 2015.
