OmniVision Unveils OV9724 HD Image Sensor

OmniVision Technologies, a digital imaging solutions manufacturer headquartered in Santa Clara, California, has revealed the OV9724, a high performance, ultra-compact HD image sensor.

The OV9724 image sensor offers 720p high-definition video at 30 fps in a miniaturized form factor and has been designed for highly compact designs. The miniature OV9724 CameraChip sensor measuring only 1/9” is based on the 1.4 µ OmniBSI+ pixel architecture. It enables integration of small form factor HD cameras into narrow-bezel devices such as smartphones, tablets, mobile devices, notebooks and portable gaming systems.

The serial camera control bus interface of the OV9724 enables programming of defective pixel cancelling and exposure control processing. The image sensor offers low power consumption and requires a low operating voltage for embedded portable applications. It supports free-running and gated clock, global analog gain and also down sample mode. It also provides high sensitivity in low light conditions along with auto black level calibration. The image sensor also provides sub-sampled, full-frame or windowed 8-/10-bit images.

The Director of product marketing, Nick Nam stated that the OV9724 leverages on the OmniBSI+ technology to enable manufacturers to integrate HD video cost effectively into slim devices. The compact image sensor featuring a high speed, one-lane MIPI interface is available in CSP3 and COB models. It easily fits into a module size of 6x4.5x2.5 mm.

OmniVision has also developed the OVM9724, packaged in the company’s proprietary CameraCube format enabling integration of a cost-effective camera solution for extremely thin tablet design and bezel notebooks. It is available in a CameraCube module sized 4x3x2.5 mm.
