Lockheed Martin Receives Order for Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Sensor Detection System

Lockheed Martin, the aerospace and security company, has received an order from the Japanese Ministry of Defense for its AbleSentry systems. These systems are designed to detect and provide warning about chemical, radiological and biological attacks.

The threat detection system uses a network of sensors in remote locations to increase the ability to detect threats. The networked sensors decrease the chances of a system-wide alarm due to a single sensor. A complex algorithm reduces the possibility of false alarms. The system can be easily installed and maintained. The AbleSentry system provides information about the source of threat, and its speed of movement. This facility will enable battlefield commanders to move their troops out of danger.

The new system has the same footprint of Lockheed Martin's Enhanced Biological Aerosol Warning System (EBAWS) and Biological Aerosol Warning System (BAWS). It is advancement of the two systems and in addition has radiological and chemical detection capabilities. The Japan Ground Self Defense Forces has acquired 24 BAWS and EBAWS systems from Lockheed Martin. Users of the BAWS or EBAWS can easily learn the functionality of the AbleSentry system.

The remote sensors in the new AbleSentry system have the capability to measure humidity, temperature, location data, wind direction and wind speed. It can also collect air samples for further testing.

The Japan Ministry of Defense has ordered for 19 AbleSentry systems valued at $22.4 million.
