Optical sensor research and technology development company, Polestar Technologies, has won a government contract for developing a system to detect explosives that are hidden on persons.
The Joint Improvised Explosive Device Deterrent Organization (JIEDDO) has awarded the $2.5 million contract. The endeavor is a part of the war on terrorism. The new system is designed for use in places that may be potential targets for terrorists. They may be used at airports, concerts and sporting events for scanning people before they enter the venue.
The Senior Vice President of Research and Technology at Polestar Technologies, Dr. Ranganathan Shashidhar, is leading the sensor research program. He states that the novel explosive sensing technology will help improve the security of public places. The technology utilizes the current developments in signal processing technology, he added.
Polestar Technologies had earlier engaged in contracts with the NIH and the NASA. It had supported the programs for development of pH and oxygen sensors. The products were later modified for commercialization. The company has also developed a carbon dioxide sensor. Polestar’s 3-in-1 monitoring system designed for simultaneous monitoring of pH, oxygen and carbon dioxide is being used in various markets, including food and beverage, pure water, biopharmaceutical, bio-fuel, brewing and the environmental markets.
The present contract is an accelerated R&D program and Polestar Technologies has to deliver the prototypes within a period of 15 months to the JIEDDO.
