A new market report published by Transparency Market Research titled ‘Image Sensors Market - The U.S. Industry Analysis Market Share, Trends and Forecast, 2011 - 2017,’ states that the U.S. image sensors market, which was valued in 2011 to have USD 2.0 B, will experience a CAGR of 11.1% between 2011 and 2017 to attain USD 3.7 B in 2017.
The Linear image sensors segment was worth USD 1.7 B in 2011 and resulted in 84.2%, the largest share in the U.S. image sensors market. Between 2011 and 2017, the X-ray image sensors market segment will undergo a rapid revenue growth at a CAGR of 18.8%. The U.S. CMOS image sensor shipment had 464.0 M units in 2011 with a growth of 27.6% over 2010.
X-ray image sensors, CCD image sensors including area image sensor and linear image sensors form a part of image sensors. Linear image sensors are again classified into InGaAs image sensors, CMOS image sensors, and NMOS image sensors. CMOS image sensors enable the linear image sensors to reach the highest share of shipment and revenue. High resolution imaging technology has an increasing demand due to rapid adoption of new generation of mobile technology and the emergence of new technological innovations.
CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) image sensors integrate all camera functions within a single chip, thereby promoting cost efficiency. Market players incorporate digital signal processing (DSPs) and also integrated signal processing (ISPs) for higher levels of integration. Other features include multiple color filters, enabling JPEG images conversion on the sensor.
Sensor markets also grow with increase in deployment of sensors in handsets, tablets, and motion-based image sensors applications, in addition to gaming and motion-based web browsing.
Image sensor prices have gone down over the last few years and this trend is likely to continue over the next few years.
