JDRF and BD Partner to Develop Advanced Glucose Monitoring Devices

JDRF together with BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) recently declared that its present collaboration related to Type 1 diabetes (T1D) will be extended to promote expedite the development of the proprietary glucose-sensing technology of BD that precisely presents consistent glucose information.

JDRF and HCT (The Helmsley Charitable Trust) partnered to support innovative technologies that will form the basis for developing fully automated artificial pancreas systems having improved monitoring capabilities. The JDRF-HCT Sensor Initiative includes this research expansion. The initiative was created to promote rapid development of advanced sensors that lead to better detection of the altering glucose levels. The currently available continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have promoted glucose control in T1D patients. High precision and reliability through advanced sensors will foster more automated artificial pancreas systems.

T1D is an autoimmune disease, a condition wherein pancreas stops generating insulin. Calculation of insulin in T1D patients is carried out by evaluating blood glucose levels using CGM or other conventional methods. Precise doses of insulin need to be injected many times a day for insulin-deficient patients.

CGM devices provide trend information on the velocity of movement of glucose in addition to producing real-time snapshot of the glucose level of diabetes patients. The devices indicate the increase or decrease in glucose. JDRF's landmark CGM trials represent that CGM, upon deployment leads to diabetes control and reduces the frequency of high and low blood glucose on regular use. Next-generation sensors having high precision and error detection capabilities will support the development of artificial pancreas systems that maintain normal glucose levels by automating insulin delivery.
