Micromem Commences to Develop Nanotechnology-Based Sensors for Leading Automotive Firm

Through its wholly owned subsidiary ‘Micromem Applied Sensor Technologies’ (MAST), Micromem Technologies declared that its executed product development agreement with a major automotive company was initiated on June 25, 2012.

The work includes an array of nanotechnology-based sensors that can enhance the automobile proprietor’s real time visualization of engine oil analytical measurements.

Under this contract, MAST will supply a proof of concept sensor package capable of being compatible within a hollowed out oil pan plug, foraging power inductively from the engine environment’s and enabling wireless communication to the control unit of auto maker. In contrast to traditional approaches for oil sensing capabilities, the MAST sensor analytically measures the oil stream just like the measurement procedure within a certified laboratory.

Micromem is certain about the specification compliance. These specifications ensure maintaining competitive advantage. Micromem will demonstrate the proof of concept in another three months, after which ASIC chip manufacturing cycle will contract the overall form factor.

The commercial arrangement between Micromem and client will remain confidential. Initially, during routine production, OEM sales will provide opportunities for Micromem for commercialization of its product with a new vehicle sale. Plans are in the offing to provide the product as a retrofit for late model vehicles. Furthermore, this product will achieve an emerging market opportunity by exporting vehicles to China, India and the likes. This product will provide the necessary oil quality data in countries with uncertain oil quality specifications. By using real time information, the automakers will make changes to their vehicle warranties.
