In a move that expands its current portfolio of sensor solutions, ITT Exelis has acquired Space Computer, the privately-owned provider of processing solutions for hyperspectral sensor data. Established in 1987, Space Computer develops algorithms, software and real time signal processing systems for analysis of data from advanced sensor systems, particularly, hyperspectral devices.
Hyperspectral sensor systems are used onboard manned and unmanned aircrafts and satellites to detect and establish the location of hidden targets, signal to other sensors for added authentication and for real time transmission of data to end users. Almost all the hyperspectral sensors developed for the U.S. military since 1996 employ Space Computer’s technology. Amongst its customers are government organizations, NASA, research facilities under the ambit of the U.S. Department of Defense and commercial organizations. The company has employee strength of 37 and posted $14.1 million as revenue for 2011.
Space Computer will merge with Exelis Geospatial Systems as a consequence of the acquisition. S. Danny Rajan, Director of emerging offerings at Exelis Geospatial Systems, stated that the acquisition is in line with the company’s strategy to consolidate their market position as a provider of data collection and processing solutions. The company has decades of experience in the areas of surveillance, network communications, navigation, electronic warfare and air traffic solutions. The revenue posted for 2011 was $5.8 billion.
