Sierra Nevada and ITT Exelis have jointly constructed a manned aircraft-based Wide-Area Airborne Persistent Surveillance (WAPS) system capability called ‘Vigilant Stare’. Through this collaboration, proven and advanced solutions can be incorporated in airborne wide-area surveillance on a cost-effective, fee-for-service basis for customers. It helps reduce upfront costs and risks.
The Vigilant Stare system is derived from a U.S. Air Force system and has been mounted on a Twin Otter aircraft. Vigilant Stare is capable of offering infrared and visible coverage of city-sized areas. Users within domestic support missions can benefit from the Vigilant Stare’s real-time motion imagery.
Vigilant Stare motion imagery concurrently features three tiers including best-resolution tactical chip-outs, the full field of regard, and multiple sub-views of the full field of view.
Users can access these products via an enterprise dissemination backend. Users involved in ground operations will be provided with real time best-resolution chip-outs.
According to the VP for Persistent Surveillance Systems at Sierra Nevada, Dave Bullock, this game-changing system will ensure its customers with product in near real time for unparalleled, quick exploitation and forensics analysis support. The whole mission data set is being offered post-mission for live, extended archiving, discovery and further exploitation.
The Vigilant Stare collaboration between SNC and Exelis ensures the market with mature operational capability that supplies readily available Wide-Area Airborne Surveillance capabilities with numerous service options through which customers can have their requirements fulfilled.
