Garmin International Launches Portable GPS and GLONASS Receiver

Garmin International, a designer, manufacturer and marketer of navigation, communication and information devices and applications, has introduced a portable GPS and GLONASS receiver, which brings high GPS capability to mobile devices. While using GLONASS and GPS satellite networks, the time taken by the receiver to lock on to a position is about 20% faster than utilizing GPS individually.

In addition, when both the satellites are used, the receiver has access to an additional 24 satellites than utilizing GPS individually. This proves beneficial for users, who require satellite navigation in demanding environment, such as urban environments or deep canyons.

Garmin’s GLO technology provides wireless connection to Android and Apple devices through Bluetooth. Additionally, the product offers a battery life of 12 hours and a position update rate of nearly 10 times per second, which is 10 times faster when compared to internal GPS receivers equipped in a large number of mobile devices.

Carl Wolf, VP of aviation Sales and Marketing, Garmin, stated that applications, such as Garmin Pilot, have increased the utilization of iPads and other devices. However, the internal receivers in these smart devices are not advanced for aviation application, and hence the GPS signal can be slow and less accurate to provide updates. He added that this problem is solved with the use of GLO by leveraging two independent satellites and the GPS technology of Garmin to deliver the most regular and accurate position updates for a mobile device present in the cockpit.

A unique GLO for Aviation pack is offered for pilots and the pack includes a free trial of Garmin Pilot, an aviation navigation app for mobile devices, and a mount, power cable.
