ICEdot, an emergency identification and notification service, has collaborated with SenseTech to develop a wireless helmet-mounted sensor for detecting head impacts.
The device features a slim profile and can be mounted on any helmet. On detecting an impact, which may be accident, it communicates with the user’s smart phone and signals an emergency by sending out a request for help. The wireless sensor is linked to an ICEdot app which can be installed in smartphones. When the sensor detects a considerable amount of force, it sends the data to the ICEdot app which commences an emergency countdown after activating an alarm. The GPS coordinates of the location of the incident will be sent to designated emergency contacts specified in the user’s ICEdot profile. The contact will be notified about the emergency. This will continue till the countdown clock is stopped.
The product was developed by Dr. Tim Bauer and Biju Thomas, the founders of SenseTech. Thomas suffered a head injury and this led to his collaboration with Bauer to develop the wireless sensor device.
A prototype of the helmet-mounted impact sensor will be showcased at the Wearable Technologies Conference to be held in San Francisco. Chris Zenthoefer, the CEO of ICEdot, will be highlighting the product at the Summer Games in London.
Athletes and enthusiasts taking part in action sports such as motocross, BMX, cycling, skateboarding and snow sports may benefit from the innovative impact sensor.
