Freescale Launches Compact, High-Performance Accelerometers

Freescale Semiconductor has recently launched a novel low-power high-efficiency three-axis accelerometers integrated within a 2x2 mm ultra-compact package.

The Xtrinsic MMA8652FC 12-bit and MMA8653FC 10-bit accelerometers are pin-compatible, delivering advanced motion precision and low noise performance for advanced mobile devices such as smart phones, health care and portable navigation solutions. These new compact-sized devices complement Freescale’s 3-axis accelerometer family and are suitable for power- and size- constrained applications.

IHS states that motion sensor technology’s global revenue will have two-fold increase in the next five years.

Gesture detection, anti-theft, image stability, tap to control, and tumble and freefall detection features are achieved with Freescale’s Xtrinsic MMA8652FC and MMA8653FC micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) based accelerometers. Integrated with Freescale’s sensor toolbox development tools, the MMA865xFC accelerometers ensure developers with reduced time-to-market and costs, providing efficient design cycles. MMA865xFC family enables system designers to incorporate apps like eCompass and location-based services and standard functions like orientation detection, within their products.

Freescale’s MMA865xFC embedded accelerometers combine with host processor to determine contextual environmental sensing and allowing registering precise movement for a wide range of smart devices.

  • The MMA865xFC 3-axis accelerometers are compatible with Freescale’s Xtrinsic eCompass and calibration software. It features low-profile 2 x 2 x 1 mm DFN package, low noise of 156 micro g per root Hertz (independent of resolution), 12- and 10- bit digital output, 1.5 to 800 Hz of output data rate, high sensitivity up to 1 mg per LSB, interrupt and IIC interface supply up to 1.62 to 3.6 V, low-power mode up to 6 µA, supply voltage from 1.95 to 3.6 V, orientation (portrait/landscape) detection with hysteresis, and includes two programmable interrupt pins for seven interrupt sources.
  • The MMA8652FC embedded motion detection features jolt detection, freefall or motion detection, self test, pulse detection, and automatic output data rate change for auto-wake/sleep. The MMA8652FC embedded 32 sample FIFO buffer has high pass filtered data available per sample and through the FIFO.

Both accelerometers are available in sample quantities.
