Chemring Detection Systems, which provides solutions to detect biological, chemical and explosive risks, has awarded a $49 million contract to deliver biological detection systems to the US Navy and US Army.
Chemring Detection Systems is a company of Chemring Group. The Aberdeen Providing Grounds Contracting Command’s Edgewood Contracting Division awarded the contract to Chemring Detection Systems for more than 100 joint biological point detection systems (JBPDS) and initial fielding packages. These systems will be deployed in the Stryker nuclear biological chemical reconnaissance vehicle and on the US Navy ships including the USS Ross (DDG 71).
The JBPDS automatically detects trace amounts of airborne biological agents, activates remote and local warning systems, and transmits threat information through standard communication systems. Chemring Detection Systems manufactures the systems at its facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The delivery of the systems is scheduled between December 2012 and December 2013.
The JBPDS program is a program of the US Army and is under the management of the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense. The JBPDS is the only US biological detection system which has successfully completed the Whole System Live Agent Test. The JBPDS is available in different variants such as standalone fixed-emplacement, trailer, HMMWV shelter and Shipboard.
It is possible to network multiple systems to offer a large area of surveillance by enabling command and control using a single operational interface. International customers can purchase the JBPDS with an approved US State Department export license.
