Smiths Detection has unveiled a new manufacturing facility in Malaysia for X-ray baggage scanners. This new major plant will promote the sales expansion of its advanced screening systems in the rapidly-developing markets of south-east Asia, specifically for aviation security.
Pilot production has already begun at the 130,000-square foot site in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. With increase in workforce to up to 170, the space is expected to be accommodated within 18 months.
According to the President of Smiths Detection, Mal Maginnis, driven by consistent growth witnessed in other market sectors, the Asian aviation market is expected to develop steadily for the projected future. The Johor plant marks the expansion of its manufacturing footprint to cater to the global business requirements. In addition to its two regional hubs for X-ray production in Wiesbaden (Germany), and Maryland, (USA), Smiths Detections has now expanded its position in Malaysia, providing better speed-to-market, distribution, logistics, and customer service. By optimizing quality levels within all three locations, the company can attain long-term reputation within this critical product area.
Located 7-mi from Singapore, the Johor facility will improve its production rates, with the Wiesbaden facility being concerned more on production for European and regional customers, specifically on engineering, R&D, and product development operations, while serving as Smith’s global centre of excellence for X-ray technology.
Johor will primarily focus on manufacturing systems to parcels and screen hand baggage with subsequent higher versions capable of screening pallets and freight. Later in 2013, the new site will accommodate the production of advanced aTiX automatic explosives detector.
Since over a decade, Smiths Detection has been operating from its base at Shaw Tower, Beach Road, Singapore.
