Sensity Systems Launches New Class of Light Sensory Network

Sensity Systems Inc. today announced the world’s first Light Sensory Network (LSN): a new class of digital sensor network that takes advantage of LED lighting conversions to help light owners enhance energy efficiency while transforming their luminaires into strategic assets.

To create LSNs, Sensity provides networked LED luminaires and retrofit kits that replace high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures.

LSNs turn LED luminaires into networked, sensor-equipped, solid-state, smart devices capable of capturing and transmitting sensory big data from the surrounding environment into a variety of applications and services, such as public safety, weather monitoring, parking management and retail analytics. Each luminaire becomes a node in a powerful, broadband, carrier-grade network that can provide valuable services for light owners.

NetSense: Sensity Systems’ Light Sensory Network Platform

Sensity’s NetSense platform, the first commercially available instantiation of the LSN, integrates LED lighting, sensors, high-speed networking, cloud computing and big data analytics into a single, MultiService Platform (MSP) with distributed intelligence.

In Sensity’s advanced distributed computing architecture, each LED luminaire is equipped with sensors and a fully functioning processor able to run software instructions. When networked together, these luminaires collectively gather and process data about the surrounding environment, enabling analytics that transform the raw data into actionable information. The networked LED luminaires also deliver huge energy savings—approximately 80 percent with LED lighting alone and approximately 90 percent with LED lighting plus networking, compared to fluorescent or HID lighting—for a faster return on investment.

The NetSense platform allows owners of area or industrial lighting to capitalize on a number of current trends and opportunities. Forecasts predict that LEDs will capture 45 percent of the global lighting market by 2016. In addition, industry analyst firm Gartner has indicated that one of the ten strategic technology trends for 2013 will be the “Internet of Things”: the networked interconnection of everyday physical objects—from kitchen appliances to lighting fixtures—to one another using embedded sensors and recognition technology.

Sensity has already begun working with several partners and third-party developers eager to create innovative SensApps applications and services that run on NetSense. These SensApps applications and services include lighting control, power monitoring, lighting maintenance, network monitoring, parking management, security, asset management and retail analytics.
