Cognitec Systems topped the initial Multiple Biometric Evaluation (MBE) 2010 carried out by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The test is conducted to independently evaluate the iris recognition, face recognition technologies, and compare them with the algorithms from certain research centers and leading commercial companies. The initial results of the test announced last week, revealed Cognitec’s exceptional operational performance in face recognition technology.
Generally, the MBE is regarded as an independent evaluation platform that succeeds the Face Recognition Vendor Tests 2002 and 2006. Face Recognition Vendor Tests were previously performed by NIST to evaluate biometrics independently, where Cognitec’s algorithms also showed excellent operational performance.
In the early MBE-STILL tests, Cognitec’s algorithms demonstrated outstanding operational performance across all test protocols. The algorithms’ performance was particularly exceptional in the common real-world scenario tests. These comprised of searches for huge photo databases of drivers’ license or passport issued by the government.
In the open-set identification test, specifically conducted to assess algorithm performance in huge database applications, algorithms from Cognitec demonstrated false smallest alarm levels. The algorithm’s performance at this test reflects the operational results that can be expected in a real-world setting, which comprises limited resources and multi-million image galleries for visual inspection.
Details of the test results are available from NIST. The results do not indicate any type of product endorsement from the US Government.
